So translators are co-creators of our world literature. But they also ensure everyone can read standard American detective stories or light romantic novels. They find the right images for odd turns of phrase and they research on specialist topics. They translate cookery books and self-help manuals, a manager's how-to handbook or handcraft instructions. In short: translators become specialists in everything they work on.

General information

Without translators, there would be no book fairs with international aspirations. Which is why with its Translators Centre, the Frankfurt Book Fair offers them a platform for presentation, information and networking. Everyone who's interested is very welcome – both non-professionals and the specialists!

In Hall 5.0 (E 955), editors can make contact with potential translators for their titles. Experienced translators are also available on the information counter to answer any questions. And by the way: more than 100 translators of all languages can also be found in the industry's biggest personal directory, the Frankfurt Who's Who!

Programme 2009

You had the choice of almost forty very different events: translators in conversation with their authors, professional debates, talks, readings and prize presentations. Information on translation funding programmes for publishing companies were also on the agenda.

Key focus China: on Friday, 16 October, we offered various events on the topic of translating Chinese literature. And on Saturday, 17 October, we hosted two Chinese authors with his German translator.

"Showpiece Translator"

This is where you can see actual translation work in progress. Every day from 10.00 a.m. to 6.00 p.m., translators can be watched at work, showing how a foreign-language original turns into German text. Questions and discussions are welcome!

Exhibitions

Translators are called upon to bring their publications with them to the Centre so that an "Exhibition in Progress" can take shape and grow throughout the Fair, revealing the broad spectrum of translators' activities. In addition, a photo exhibition features award-winning translators with their works.

These exhibitions and the Showpiece Translator events are organised by our partner, the VdÜ.
