In 2016, Germany was the Guest of Honour at the Bologna Children’s Book Fair – the most important international platform for children’s and juvenile media and illustration.
A specially curated illustrator exhibition and professional programme were held on the fair grounds, along with events in the city. Germany’s logo as Guest of Honour: Tatjana Müksch/Ole Könneke. (Click the picture to download the logo)
The exhibition LOOK! with original pieces by 30 illustrators working in Germany was at the heart of Germany’s presence at the fair. The selected children’s books and graphic novels covered a very wide thematic and aesthetic range – poetic reveries alongside concrete realism and striking photography next to delicate drawings.
In addition to the LOOK! exhibition, a book collection presented current titles by 85 German children’s book illustrators. The fair’s international audience was introduced to 30 new works alongside 55 classics. An illustrator list that provides an overview of all participating artists is available. The exhibition covered 300 square meters and was open to the public until 10 April. The exhibition will subsequently be on view at the Fabrik der Künste in Hamburg (14 June - 3 July).
What’s more, professional events were be held in the fair’s event forums (Illustrators’ Café, Authors’ Café, Translators’ Café and Digital Café). The Goethe-Institut organised the supporting programme for the Guest of Honour, with an exhibition, curated by Rotraut Susanne Berner, dedicated to the "Tollen Hefte" series, along with other exhibitions in the city, workshops with the studio collective "Labor Ateliergemeinschaft", a university-level competition and a writing programme for schools.
