Crossing borders: translate - transpose - communicate
Discussion among authors from Kenia, Sambia and Nigeria
The UN has declared 2019 to be the International Year of Indigenous Languages. Questions about language politics and their influence on culture and social-political power structures arise. What do writers from Kenya, Sambia and Nigeria think about multilingualism, African languages and translations, how does it influence their work? “According to a saying in Kiswahili, 'Kiingereza kilikuja kwa meli', the English language arrived by ship. The idea that it came to me by ship gives me certain liberties in my work with the English language”, says Okwiri Oduor, a young Kenyan writer.
The discussion will be held in English. The Event is supported by Stimmen Afrikas, Interkontinental and Residenzverlag.
