Gerd Braune talks to Karin Dalka (Frankfurter Rundschau) about how the indigenous population in Canada was and is treated in the past and today.

Gerd Braune talks about the situation of the indigenous peoples in Canada in the past and present.

Similar to the USA, the Canadian state is confronted with a sorrowful history with the indigenous peoples of North America: until a few decades ago, attempts were made to erase the cultural identity of these people and to assimilate them, sometimes with brutal measures. How promising is the recently initiated reconciliation process? Gerd Braune, author of the book »Indigenous Peoples in Canada«, will introduce the three indigenous peoples of Canada and their struggle for political recognition at the event. With a representative of the indigenous peoples, he will talk – via screen – about the process of reconciliation with the Canadian state and the historical reappraisal of the burdened past, and will then take questions from the audience.
