A Journey into the World of Cosplay

A panel discussion about Chinese cosplay and Chinese pop culture

Cosplay, a phenomenon which has also been present in Germany for some years now, gives rise to a lot of questions, above all: “why do they do that”? At this discussion panel we will address the origin and meaning of cosplay which in this country is most often associated with Japan. However it also has its roots in China and plays a major role in China’s youth and pop culture. Questions from the audience are very much appreciated. Our guests will be Michael Grunewald (sociologist), Dr. Bernd Dolle-Weinkauff (youth research) and Elisabeth Smat (cosplayer, student of sinology). The discussion will be moderated by Christina Werum-Wang (director of the Confucius Institute Frankfurt).
