More than a word: Václav Havel – winner of the 1989 Peace Prize

More than a word: Václav Havel – winner of the 1989 Peace Prize

The German Book Trade (Börsenverein des Deutschen Buchhandels) awarded the Peace Prize of the German Book Trade (Friedenspreis) to Václav Havel, Czech dissident, on 15. 10. 1989. Five months earlier, Havel was still the best-known political prisoner of the Czechoslovak communist regime. And three months later he was already Czechoslovak President and a world celebrity. He could not receive the prize awarded on the occasion of the Frankfurt Book Fair in person as he, as an enemy of the regime, was not allowed to leave the country. So, two ceremonies were held – a formal one at the Frankfurt Book Fair in the presence of President von Weizsäcker and Chancellor Kohl, and a second, informal one at the Prague bookshop of Karel Čapek in the presence of the laureate and his friends.
