New programme: Frankfurt International Booksellers

Further education and networking programme for international booksellers

For the first time in 2020, Frankfurter Buchmesse is inviting international booksellers to apply for a new further education and networking programme: Frankfurt International Booksellers.

The programme is aimed at international booksellers who offer foreign-language titles in their bookshops and would like to gain insight into the workings of the German book market and German publishing. Some 20-25 international booksellers will be selected by Frankfurter Buchmesse to take part in an exclusive training, exchange and networking programme. The programme will be organised by Frankfurter Buchmesse with financial support from the German Federal Foreign Office.

The application deadline is 28 September 2020.

The first version of the programme will take place virtually. Participants will join a series of online seminars between October and December this year.

Requirements for participation

  • Several years of activity in the book trade
  • Good command of English
  • Experience in sales of foreign-language titles
  • Recommendation from your own company management

What to expect

Further education

Participation in online meetings and online seminars about the German book market and book trade topics (roughly every two weeks from October to December 2020). Information on the digital professional and cultural programme of Frankfurter Buchmesse (14-18 October 2020).

Programme

Online seminars on the German book market (the publishing landscape, the distribution and bookselling system, programme presentation by German publishers) and on bookselling topics (best-practice examples of German bookstores and current topics based on the specific needs of the participants).

Networking

Establishing contacts with German publishers and distributors. Exchange on the participants' book markets and their specific challenges, as well as networking among the participants.

Who can apply?

The Frankfurt International Booksellers programme is designed for international booksellers who would like to learn more about the German book market and publishing industry and whose shops carry foreign-language titles (from the areas of fiction, non-fiction, children's and youth literature, art, education and science).

This call is especially aimed at:

/ Booksellers who already offer titles by German-language authors for sale (in German or translation) or who are interested in doing so.

/ Booksellers from future Frankfurter Buchmesse Guest of Honour countries (Canada, Spain, Slovenia, Italy)

 

Which application documents must be submitted?

/ Completed online application form

/ A letter of recommendation from your company management in English or German

 

When is the application deadline?

Please submit your application no later than 25 September 2020.

 

Costs and expenses

Costs for participation in the Frankfurt International Booksellers programme are covered by Frankfurter Buchmesse with financial support from the German Federal Foreign Office.
