Andreas Platthaus was born in 1966 in the German town of Aachen. After a banking apprenticeship and studies of business management, he studied Rhetoric, Philosophy and History at the University of Tübingen. He became a contributor of the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung’s Arts section in 1997 and is the managing editor of the paper’s literary supplement. Since 1998, the writer has published several books, most recently On the Palisades: An American Diary, published in 2020. Platthaus was honored by the French Republic as Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres in 2017 and received the Culture Award from the German federal state of Hesse in 2018. He became a Thomas Mann Fellow in 2019.
