Frankfurter Buchmesse to receive 2022 Julius Campe Prize

Frankfurter Buchmesse is the recipient of this year’s Julius Campe Prize, awarded by publisher HOFFMANN UND CAMPE. 
The prize is given to individuals and institutions that have rendered outstanding services in the fields of literary criticism and literary communication. The winner receives 99 bottles of fine wine and a facsimile of Heinrich Heine’s »Französische Zustände« (French Affairs), published by HOFFMANN UND CAMPE.

German Publishers & Booksellers Association and Frankfurter Buchmesse call for protection for Turkish exiles in Sweden and Finland

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has demanded the extradition of Turkish exiles who are classified as “suspected terrorists” in their native country as part of the agreement allowing Sweden and Finland to join NATO. His list includes Ragıp Zarakolu, a Turkish publisher and human rights activist who has been in exile in Sweden since 2012. The German Publishers & Booksellers Association and Frankfurter Buchmesse condemn Erdogan’s planned exchange and call on Sweden and Finland to stand firm.

Applications are open for four international Frankfurter Buchmesse fellowship and grant programmes

Frankfurter Buchmesse has been promoting networking and further education for international industry representatives for many decades by organising various fellowship and grant programmes. Applications are now open for the following international programmes: Frankfurt International Booksellers, Frankfurt Invitation Programme, Frankfurt Fellowship and Paris-Frankfurt Fellowship. Booksellers, publishers and editors, as well as rights and licensing managers from around the world can submit applications now; the application deadline is 30 April 2022. The deadline for the Paris-Frankfurt Fellowship is 15 March 2022.

Guest of Honour Canada presents GuestScroll to Spain – Guest of Honour at Frankfurter Buchmesse 2022

On the last day of Frankfurter Buchmesse, the current Guest of Honour traditionally says “good bye” by presenting the coming year’s Guest of Honour with the GuestScroll. During a festive ceremony held in the Festhalle on the fairgrounds today (24 October), Caroline Fortin, representing Canada as the 2020/2021 Guest of Honour, handed over the GuestScroll to Maria José Gálvez, director general of Books and Reading Promotion in Spain’s Ministry of Culture and Sport.

73rd Frankfurter Buchmesse: New start for the book industry, joy of reconnecting, and controversy over freedom of expression and its limits

Die 73. Frankfurter Buchmesse (20.-24. Oktober 2021) setzte für die Kulturbranche ein wichtiges Zeichen in der Pandemie. Dank eines umfangreichen Hygienekonzeptes konnte sich das Fach- und das Privatpublikum unter dem Motto “Re:connect” wieder sicher begegnen. 36.000 Fachbesucher*innen aus 105 Ländern und 37.500 Leser*innen aus 85 Ländern hat die Frankfurter Buchmesse 2021 als die erste große Präsenzveranstaltungen der internationalen Buchbranche erreicht. Insgesamt 2013 Unternehmen aus 80 Ländern präsentierten sich in den Hallen, im LitAg, an den neuen Workstations oder als digitale Aussteller*innen im Netz. Insgesamt 2.500 Medienvertreter*innen aus 39 Ländern waren für die diesjährige Frankfurter Buchmesse akkreditiert.

The Governor General of Canada to open Frankfurter Buchmesse

The Governor General of Canada, Her Excellency the Right Honourable Mary May Simon, will travel to Frankfurt from 19 to 21 October 2021, where she will represent Canada, the Guest of Honour at this year’s Frankfurter Buchmesse (20-24 October 2021).The Governor General will speak at the opening ceremony and the opening of the Canadian pavilion. This will be Her Excellency’s first visit abroad since being installed as the 30th Governor General of Canada on July 26, 2021.

EU project: Europe is looking for homogeneous statistics on reading and translation.

Two studies by Aldus Up, the European book fairs network co-founded in the framework of the Creative Europe programme and coordinated by the Italian Publishers Association (AIE), which were published on the network's platform on 16 June during the Bologna Children's Book Fair show: Europe is not united yet when it comes to statistics on the book world. From reading habits to translations data, each country performs surveys independently, making it difficult to carry out an overall analysis of trends.

GINT Translation Competition: Call out to emerging translators interested in translating texts in the humanities and social sciences

The Geisteswissenschaften International Nonfiction Translation Prize (GINT) is being launched for the fifth time. The competition is open to applicants who have not yet translated more than one complete book from German into English. The three prizewinners will be announced in mid-September and will be invited to participate in a virtual Science Slam at Frankfurter Buchmesse (20-24 October 2021).
