Guests of Honour in the years past

A review of previous guest countries at Frankfurter Buchmesse.

Rücksachau Ehrengast Norwegen

An annual literary journey

It all began with Italy. Ever since 1988, our Guests of Honour have been attracting trade and private visitors to Frankfurter Buchmesse. The Guest of Honour is usually a country, but it has also been linguistic regions. Either way, they always enrich Frankfurter Buchmesse with their stories, rich culture and uniqueness.

With a comprehensive cultural programme of readings, awards ceremonies, tastings of typical specialities, exhibitions and performances, the Guest of Honour has a special place every year at the fair and in events throughout the city.

Recent years have seen many inspiring Guests of Honour: Norway 2019, Georgia 2018, France 2017, Netherlands & Flanders 2016, Indonesia 2015, Finland 2014, Brazil 2013

Guest of Honour 2019: Norway

"The Dream We Carry" was Norway’s motto at Frankfurter Buchmesse in 2019. The land of longing, inhabited by the "happiest people in the world", is not only rich in nature, mountains and water. It is a country with a long literary tradition and great stories. Norway invited us on a journey "to an unknown bay" - full of surprising encounters with a rich culture and literature.
