"My "360 degree view" of the industry means I am across all the hot issues and have a large variety of contacts, many of which would be interested in learning about the Club and attending its events. I have attended the Club before as part of "Meet the Experts" and think is it a wonderful resource."

How often have you been to Frankfurter Buchmesse?

This year will be my fifth visit.

What are you most looking forward to regarding the 2019 book fair?

I enjoy the global reach of the fair. I am looking forward to catching up with colleagues and contacts from around the world to learn what they’re excited about and what’s been keeping them busy in the past year.

Which trend/development in publishing have you seen recently that you deem interesting/to watch?

I have been speaking to lots of clients across the sector about the opportunities and challenges of using artificial intelligence (AI) in publishing: in academic and journal publishing systems, in education technology and in exciting creative experiments. What was your latest read, or your favorite book? I just finished reading The Milkman by Anna Burns – a worthy Booker prize winner.

How often have you been to Frankfurter Buchmesse?

It´s my first time! I was present in many different editions in different bookfairs in Latin America (Buenos Aires, Santiago de Chile, Lima and Guadalajara) and Europe (London and Madrid, among others), but I never had the possibility to go to Frankfurt.

What are you most looking forward to regarding the 2019 book fair?

I am especially interested in having an accurate view on the present of the publishing industry. And I would like to know innovative projects.

Which trend/development in publishing have you seen recently that you deem interesting/to watch?

I am especially interested in knowing new business models (like membership sites, book clubs, mobile apps...). For me, the most interesting thing in recent years is happening at the crossroads between Big Data and Artificial Intelligence (to predict bookssales for example, or sentimental analysis research)

What was your latest read, or your favorite book?

"What's the Future and Why It's Up to Us", Tim O´Reilly.

How often have you been to Frankfurter Buchmesse?

This will be my 10th Frankfurt Book Fair and I must admit that Frankfurt is my favorite. I’ve attended the Beijing, Bologogna, and London book Fairs over the course of my career and must admit that Frankfurt is my favorite. Nothing comes close to the scale, the diversity of cultures, and the relationships one has a chance to build and renew at each of these events – but Frankfurt has always been my favorite.

I have to admit, however, that I am fascinated by the Sharjah and attending this event is definitely on my professional „bucket list“.

What are you most looking forward to regarding the 2019 book fair?

I am looking forward to meeting old friends, making new ones and of course the excitement and energy of the the Fair and Frankfurt itself.

I have been fortunate to have traveled widely during the course of my career and have to admit the visiting Germany is always something I look forward to with excitement. It’s alsways a pleasure to visit Germany – whether the trip means a stop in Berlin, Frankfurt, Kiel or Munich – there’s alwatys something to see, something to learn, and something to taste!

Which trend/development in publishing have you seen recently that you deem interesting/to watch?

Business models are undergoing change at light speed and there is growing and much needed appreciation for a Total Cost of Ownership business model. I think that the industry’s steadily growing acceptance of cloud technology to accelerate content delivery and support busines services,  digital manufacturing, and a sell first, print later model are key trends to keep an eye one.

No less important is the steady migrant to third party distribution services a;llowing publishers to refocus their resources on content creation and turning over back office and logistics operations to specialist organizations.

What was your latest read, or your favorite book?

I am an avid reader of history and have just finished reading an absolutely superb biography, George Marshall, Defender of the Republic by David L. Roll (Published by Penguin Random House – ISBN 978-1-101-99097-1). Marshall was a remarkable soldier and statesman renowned for his leadership, organizational skills and his ability to build consensus among a broad range of international stakeholders. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1953 for his role in the creation the European Recovery Program also known as the Marshall Plan.

How often have you been to Frankfurter Buchmesse?

This will be my 9th visit.  I first attended in 2000 purchasing limited edition art , design, fashion, architecture and photography books for my bookstore. I returned in 2011 as a Content Acquisition Director for Kobo, and the last 3 years as a private consultant.

What are you most looking forward to regarding the 2019 book fair? Discovering new and innovative ways to reach the reader, and of course, reconnecting with old friends. In particular, I'll be looking at ways to help bridge the divide between traditional western publishing and other markets.

Which trend/development in publishing have you seen recently that you deem interesting/to watch?

While the industry, and I admit me as well, has been caught up with the rapid development of the audio business, its the acceptance of the subscription model in this sector and its wider potential that fascinates me. I will also be looking at the ways publishers are using their content to connect directly to the reader, and what types of marketing have emerged from that connection.

What was your latest read, or your favorite book?

The books that have influenced my reading most strongly in the last couple of years is Jean-Claude Izzo's Marseilles Trilogy, but It would be remiss of me not mention the wonderful Their Brilliant Careers by Australian Ryan O'Neil.

Vinutha Mallya

Vinutha Mallya - Journalist and Editor, India

About Vinutha:
"Having attended the Frankfurt Book Fair since 2009, I have personally benefitted and learnt much from the Fair—both as a publishing professional and as an industry journalist. The international network I've been able to build is because of attending the Fair and because I am also a Frankfurt Fellow. In these years, through my work as a publishing industry journalist and my involvement in some of the activities of the German Book Office in New Delhi, I have been able to convey the reasons why Frankfurt Book Fair is important for publishers and professionals in the industry. I'd like to continue these efforts through the Business Club ambassadorship this year, where the most important discussions on the industry are curated for those attending the Book Fair."

How often have you been to Frankfurter Buchmesse?

I have attended Frankfurter Buchmesse eight times since 2009.

What are you most looking forward to regarding the 2019 book fair?

At this year's fair, I want to learn about the new topics of discussion in the industry and the new ideas that publishers are working on. I also look forward to reconnecting with friends from around the world. This year I also intend to focus on meeting publishers from smaller countries, whose literatures are relatively unknown in the rest of the world.

Which trend/development in publishing have you seen recently that you deem interesting/to watch?

The steady growth of audio book publishing is interesting. It has many implications, especially for the developing countries if it can find the resources it needs.

What was your latest read, or your favorite book?

My latest reads were 'The East was Read: Socialist Culture in the Third Word', edited by Vijay Prashad and published by LeftWord Books, and 'An American Marriage' by Tayari Jones, published by Oneworld Publications. They are both now on my list of favourite books.

This is what previous Business Club Ambassadors say

The Business Club feels like home away from home at the Frankfurt Book Fair. It's a place where you can get your work done quietly, conduct important business meetings, or network with finesse.

Arpita Das Founder-Publisher YODA PRESS, India

I was also looking forward to benefit from a quiet and dedicated place to set up meetings. The additional benefit was the possibility to attend conferences and the now famous breakfasts at the Business Club.
