What you hope to get out of the Frankfurt International Translators Programme
I would like to gain a deeper insight into the world of publishing, and take the opportunity to meet publishers and authors face to face.
At the professional seminars, I hope to learn useful information about issues relating to my field.
I am looking forward to building my international network, talking to other international translators amidst the inspiring atmosphere of the Frankfurt Book Fair, and getting the chance to interact with German publishing houses.

What you hope to get out of the Frankfurt International Translators Programme
Since I’ve never been to the Frankfurt Book Fair before, I’m keen to experience it for the first time as part of a support programme. I would also like to make new contacts – with publishers who publish both contemporary literature and (lesser-known) works from the 20th century, and also with authors who have not yet been translated into Slovenian. Last but not least, I’m looking forward to meeting translator colleagues from other countries.
I am particularly interested in publishers who publish forgotten/overlooked German-language works from the 20th century alongside contemporary literature.

What you hope to get out of the Frankfurt International Translators Programme
After the many restrictions of the past year, I am hoping to 1) have conversations with other translators again, 2) get the chance to revive existing personal contacts with German-language and English-language publishers, as well as forging new contacts, 3) be able to talk to people about the challenges and opportunities that may emerge in the field of literature and culture after the pandemic.
I hope to meet many exciting authors, publishers and translators and thereby gain a new understanding of the landscape of German-language literature.

What you hope to get out of the Frankfurt International Translators Programme
My career goal is to promote modern German literature in Denmark. Very little of it is translated there, and in order to change this I need a bigger network. As a translator you often work in quite an isolated way, which is why I want to meet translators working in other languages and compare notes. I look forward to gaining insights into the publishing industry. For me, attending the largest book fair in the world is a dream come true, particularly because of my passion for new German literature.

By attending the readings and events and by visiting the Frankfurt Book Fair I hope to gain a deeper insight into the production of contemporary German-language literature. It is a unique opportunity to form new, fruitful networks with authors, publishers and international colleagues, providing impetus for future projects. I am keen to introduce important works by undiscovered German authors to an Italian audience. In short: inspiration!

What you hope to get out of the Frankfurt International Translators Programme
I expect to learn lots of new things. And I hope to apply this knowledge to our world of culture and education [of the hearts and minds of both young and old], as well as independent research, the dissemination of freedom, truth and theatre, and a fruitful exchange of diverse views and experiences. At the same time, I would like to try to extend my practice in terms of form and content. The world of books and translation is simply marvellous. I want to educate myself, and in return to make significant contributions during the event and later to my translations. I have long cherished a desire to be active and respected as a literary translator.

I’m hoping to have the chance to communicate with translators from different countries and cultures and talk about our experiences. To visit publishers and learn about new publications. Perhaps also to have conversations with authors. Because we translators usually work from home, programmes and organisations like this are really important. They often help us stay motivated. They also give us the opportunity to get more involved with the publishing side, and to share things with editors etc.

The literary scene and the publishing industry in Uzbekistan are very underdeveloped. By taking part in this programme I am hoping for the opportunity to network, which is very useful for my job. What you hope to get out of the Frankfurt International Translators Programme
I am hoping for dialogue, ideas, discoveries, networking.
Personal contact with publishers and other actors is vital for self-promotion. It would give me the chance to bring my work to the attention of more German publishing houses and institutions, thereby initiating potential new projects.
Because the rates paid to translators in Spain (14 euros per Normseite) are barely enough to live on, these kinds of invitations and grants are a very welcome form of recognition.

What you hope to get out of the Frankfurt International Translators Programme
Professional development would be the main thing for me, because there are almost no opportunities for that in my home city. I’d be really keen to take part in professional development activities like workshops or dialogues to share knowledge and experiences, because that’s what I’m really missing.
Conversations with experienced colleagues would be another form of professional development – an even more direct one. I’m particularly keen to forge contacts with authors and publishers so I can continue my work as a translator from Novosibirsk. In my experience, this works best when you have personal contacts.
By translating literature I can contribute even more to the process of cultural exchange between Germany and Russia, because culture is the most important bridge between people in these turbulent times.
I would like to get a sense of the trends in contemporary German literature – if I could do this by attending seminars or visiting publishing houses, that would be very helpful for me.

I hope that by taking part in the Frankfurt International Translators Programme, I will become more aware of the challenges involved in translating specifically from German into many other languages. It would be interesting to hear about German-speaking authors’ experiences of collaborating with their translators, and to talk to other translators about these things and other relevant issues. I’m also keen to get to know colleagues, publishers and authors.

What you hope to get out of the Frankfurt International Translators Programme
I hope to use the Frankfurt International Translators Programme as an opportunity to make contact with authors, critics, publishers and international translators, to learn more about the literary landscape of the country by actually being there, to promote concrete translation projects and to reinforce the idea of translators as cultural agents. Through dialogue with colleagues I could learn a lot about the publishing scene in their home countries, and possibly enter into a collaboration in the narrowest and the broadest sense.

I’m hoping this programme will be my first international “offline” experience since the start of the pandemic. So I feel very lucky to have the chance to spend a few interesting and intensive days in Frankfurt with my colleagues at the same time as the biggest book fair in the world is being held there. From the Programme, I’m hoping for friendly professional conversations, inspiration, and new ideas for my translation projects. I think it will help me get to know new clients who might be interested in translations of German works in other countries (such as the Persian-speaking market). For someone who works with books all the time, it’s a great opportunity to talk to German and international publishers and people. The Frankfurt Book Fair is an opportunity to discover and learn more about new (mainly contemporary) authors/books. I would enjoy conducting German workshops, and introducing translators to German publishers and possibly authors for the purpose of future collaboration.

I think it’s very important to be able to have organised meetings with international colleagues and compare notes – particularly at the world’s biggest book fair. Also, I haven’t been to the Frankfurt Book Fair in a long time and I’m hoping the Programme will give me lots of good ideas and inspiration.
