COSMOS. Cultural Osmosis - Mythology & Art. A new approach to presenting Greek mythology and its relevant art

Did you know that the Cretan Bull, the rabid bull that Heracles captured in his seventh labor, was the one that carried Zeus and Europa to Crete from Phoenicia? It was the same bull that, freed by the jittery Eurystheus, ended up in Marathon laying waste to the land, until Theseus captured him and sacrificed him to Apollo, before his encounter with the Minotaur.

Greek mythology is rich in such interrelated stories, where gods, heroes and monsters cross paths, throughout the actual and mythical world. Stories that have inspired every form of art from ancient until modern times.

COSMOS is not just another app for reading Greek mythology texts. COSMOS offers a new, non-linear approach to encoding and presenting Greek mythology, in order to facilitate the comprehension and visualization of these connections, that are otherwise not easy to perceive. At the same time, myths are connected to their depictions in works of art that originate from different places and eras, and are now physically located across the world.

COSMOS. Cultural Osmosis - Mythology & Art is an ongoing project, developed by Ekdotike Athenon ( https://www.ekdotikeathenon.gr/en/ ) and Integrated Systems Laboratory (ISL) of the National Center for Scientific Research “Demokritos”, Institute of Informatics & Telecommunications ( https://www.iit.demokritos.gr/labs/isl/ ).

ISL will present a live demonstration of the application, including an introduction to the COSMOS platform. The presentations will take place on:

● Thursday, 15 October 2020, at 11:00 a.m. and 13:00 hrs CEST, and

● Friday, 16 October 2020, at 11:00 a.m. and 13:00 hrs CEST

Each presentation will last approximately one hour and will end with a Q&A session.

Participants are asked to visit the COSMOS website https://cosmosapp.gr/en/registration-frankfurt/ and register for the time slot of their choice free of charge. Registrations are done on a first-come-first-served basis. A limit of 150 attendees per demo presentation applies. For dissemination purposes the webinars may be recorded.
