For Roman Pliske, it's above all the encounters that make a book fair – encounters like this one: In 2021, Monika Grütters unexpectedly stopped by his stand. For years she had campaigned for the independents as Minister of State for Culture and was now on her farewell tour.

2021, Minister of State Monika Grütters walked through Hall 3.1 and said goodbye. She achieved a lot for independent publishers and was in good spirits. As she left, she walkedpast our stand. I offered her, as it was still post-Covid time, to use our disinfectant. It was a Harz herbal schnapps, and her assistant, who accompanied her, said: „No, no, she doesn't drink alcohol.” But she went straight to us, had a good pour, we toasted to her time – and it was very, very good. We didn't take any photos or videos, of course.
