What are your main focuses and goals?

Because my initial exposure to German language was as a DJ in Berlin, I tend to connect with authors who have unique voices and stories that perhaps defy the expectations of English-language readers.

What do you hope to get out of the Frankfurt International Translators Programme?

In attending my first Frankfurt Buchmesse, I hope to expand on my knowledge of the German literary scene and find potential projects and publishing partners, of course. But I also look forward to enjoying the camaraderie, enthusiasm, and expertise of other international translators, as I’ve always found great inspiration in the few opportunities I’ve had to interact with German translators from around the globe.

Käsebier Takes Berlin, Gabriele Tergit

Effingers, Gabriele Tergit (in progress)

What are your main focuses and goals?

I am interested in discovering fresh, thought-provoking literary voices – whether contemporary or past. In my translations of Gabriele Tergit, I have focused on recuperating Tergit’s brisk, critical voice as one that delivers new perspectives on the historical experience of Germans, and German Jews in particular. I am fascinated by authors who turn their subjects inside-out, write from displaced positions, or play with the possibilities of language.

What do you hope to get out of the Frankfurt International Translators Programme?

I look forward to the exchange with other translators and publishers, and especially to dip into the great breadth of contemporary German writers. The dialogue and new horizons opened up by the Programme will be invaluable for delivering new impulses to my work.

Israel Chalfen, Paul Celan. Eine Biographie seiner Jugend

Doron Rabinovici, Andernorts

Georges-Arthur Goldschmidt, Vom Nachexil

Soma Morgenstern, Der Sohn des verlorenen Sohnes

What are your main focuses and goals?

I have been working in publishing as a translator from German into Italian for many years. My main field is modern and contemporary German-Jewish literature with a focus on memoirs and contemporary witnesses. A preference for Eastern and Central European prose has led me to Yiddish and prompted me to translate texts by Yiddish-Soviet writers. In general, I am also interested in more recent German-language novels.

What do you hope to get out of the Frankfurt International Translators Programme?

Apart from networking with publishers, cultural institutions and authors from German-speaking countries, I expect to exchange experiences with translators from other countries. The Frankfurt Book Fair will definitely be an enriching experience.

Außer Vernetzung mit Verlagen, Kulturinstitutionen und Autoren deutschen Sprachraumes, erwarte ich Erfahrungsaustausche mit Übersetzern aus anderen Ländern. Die Frankfurter Buchmesse wird auf jeden Fall ein bereicherndes Erlebnis sein.

Iris Radisch, Camus, Das Ideal der Einfachheit. Die letzten Dinge

Julia Franck, Die Mittagsfrau

Peter Bieri (Pascal Mercier), Nachtzug nach Lissabon. Das Gewicht der Worte

Anna Seghers, Überfahrt

Stefan Zweig, Die Welt von Gestern

What are your main focuses and goals?

My focus for translations is on social issues as well as literature with pacifist themes. I am also interested in the history of the Second World War and its consequences, especially in Germany.

The political situation in the region around Iran is not stable, there is a constant threat of war and often people, especially the younger generation who have not experienced war, are not aware of its consequences. One of my goals is to educate people about the consequences of war for a country and its inhabitants.

What I also love to translate are biographies. Reading the biographies of German-speaking writers and philosophers gives readers personal experiences and historical as well as cultural information about the German cultural sphere.

In my opinion, translators are not only "language mediators" but also "culture mediators". They introduce the people of their own country to the literature, culture and customs of other countries, and the translated works in turn become a source of inspiration for local writers. In this way, translators play an important role in the dialogue of civilisations. Translating works into other languages brings people closer together and that is my most important and real goal.

So far I have translated over 60 books. In Iran, most of them were first translations. It is a great concern of mine to introduce the new generation of German-speaking authors to Iranian readers.

What do you hope to get out of the Frankfurt International Translators Programme?

I would especially like to meet translators from other countries and exchange experiences. I would use the participation in the events that take place during the book fair for my own further education. I would like to establish contacts with German publishers in order to get the latest information on newly published books. And finally, I would be happy to just spend a few days in the world of books, authors and translating, which is not possible for me otherwise.

Kathrin Schmidt, Isabel Fargo Cole, Markus Kirchhofer, Hannah Ahrendt, Christa Wolf

What are your main focuses and goals?

This is my first visit to the renowned Frankfurt Book Fair. I hope

  1. to meet translators from other parts of the world and learn more about their works;
  2. to get the chance to establish contacts with German publishers from Germany, Switzerland and Austria, publishing books on gender issues and migration;
  3. to share my views on challenges I meet as a translator translating a culture, which is not always easy to project to readers from South Asia;
  4. to meet authors working on gender issues and migration.

Dies ist mein erster Besuch auf der renommierten Frankfurter Buchmesse. Ich freue mich darauf,

a. Übersetzer/innen aus anderen Teilen der Welt zu treffen und mehr über ihre Werke zu erfahren;

b. die Möglichkeit zu bekommen, Kontakte zu deutschen Verlegern aus Deutschland, der Schweiz und Österreich zu knüpfen, die Bücher zu Geschlechterfragen und Migration veröffentlichen;

c. meine Ansichten zu den Herausforderungen einzubringen, mit denen ich als Übersetzerin konfrontiert bin bei der Übersetzung einer Kultur, die für Leser aus Südasien nicht immer leicht zu vermitteln ist;

d. Autorinnen und Autoren zu treffen, die sich mit Geschlechterfragen und Migration beschäftigen.

What do you hope to get out of the Frankfurt International Translators Programme?

Frankfurt Book Fair is an international affair. Such a podium is important for translators like me. It gives me a chance to learn more about the nitty gritty issues of translation, meet authors like Ulrike Draessner, Juli Zeh, Katarin Poljadin and get acquainted with their new books. I also hope to meet important publishers from Germany, Switzerland and Austria, see the new published books, get in touch with the different funding agencies and gather knowledge on their different programmes. All this is hardly possible sitting in Kolkata. I would also like to attend discussions on translations, readings by authors, talks, panel discussions and other interesting programmes.

Hans Fallada, Kleiner Mann, was nun?

Stefan Zweig, Ungeduld des Herzens

Ricarda Huch, Der letzte Sommer

Jeremias Gotthelf, Die schwarze Spinne

Herta Müller, Niederungen

What are your main focuses and goals?

In Indonesia, the number of German literature and the German literary translators are still small. Many of world literary works, including from German, were also in the past translated from English–relay translation. My publisher and I have tried to change that paradigm: we translate the important literary works from their original languages. In one hand, it is such a pride and honor for me as one of those little number of German literary translators. On the other hand, it was my huge challenge as i did my first translation; i had to face a lack of networking with the other translators.  The efforts of me and my publisher have the same goal through our projects: with translating and publishing the German literary works, both of classic and contemporary, we try to enrich the treasury of the literature in our country and presenting the different reading experiences—including reading the important world literary heritages.

What you hope to get out of the Frankfurt International Translators Programme?

Translating literary works is often such of a solitary undertaking, and a network is such a keyword from being not isolated. By participating this Frankfurt International Translators Programme, i hope to gain a broader network and more insights into many aspects in translation and publishing.

Alina Bronsky, Der Zopf meiner Großmutter, Baba Dunjas letzte Liebe, et al.

David Wagner, Leben

What are your main focuses and goals?

What inspires me about authors is their joy of storytelling and the fact that they always develop their own unique language for their stories. Having translated several novels by authors of my generation, I would like to make other voices heard and contribute to changing the conventional image of German-language literature in France by making its versatility accessible to French-speaking readers.

Mich begeistert bei Autor*innen ihre Erzählfreude und dass sie für ihre Geschichten immer eine ganz eigene Sprache entwickeln. Nachdem ich mehrere Romane von Autor*innen meiner Generation übersetzt habe, möchte ich auch andere Stimmen zu Gehör bringen und dazu beitragen, das herkömmliche Bild der deutschsprachigen Literatur in Frankreich zu verändern, indem ich der französischsprachigen Leserschaft ihre Vielseitigkeit zugänglich mache.

What do you hope to get out of the Frankfurt International Translators Programme?

I look forward to meeting colleagues from all over the world because encounters always broaden one's own literary and human horizons, and I am particularly excited about the exchange with publishers and authors.

Ich freue mich auf Kolleg*innen aus der ganzen Welt, weil Begegnungen immer den eigenen literarischen und menschlichen Horizont erweitern, und bin besonders gespannt auf den Austausch mit Verlagen und Autor*innen.
