And the winners are … The Frankfurter Buchmesse Film Awards and the B3 BEN Awards
The winners of the Frankfurter Buchmesse Film Awards and the B3 BEN Awards have been chosen at a ceremony in the Frankfurt Pavilion on the evening of Saturday, 19 October 2019.
The Frankfurter Buchmesse were given in three categories: “Best Illustrated Book on Film”, “Best International Adaption for Children or Young Adults” and “Best International Literary Adaption”.
The winner in the category “Best International Literary Adaption” is the Norwegian drama “Out Stealing Horses” starring Stellan Skarsgård, directed by Hans Petter Moland and based on the novel by Per Petterson. The other nominees in the category were “The Invisible Life of Eurídice Gusmão” (Martha Batalha/Karim Aïnouz), “Der Club der Singenden Metzger” (“The Master Butcher”) (Louise Erdrich/Ulrich Edel), Animals (Emma Jane Unsworth/Sophie Hyde) and “Deutschstunde” (“The German Lesson”) (Siegfried Lenz/Christian Schwochow).
Beat Glur, president of the jury of the Frankfurter Buchmesse Film Awards Advisory Board, made the following statement regarding the winner: “Director Hans Petter Moland, who was able to get the author Per Petterson to collaborate on the screenplay, tells his congenial cinematic adaptation in flashbacks, like the book on which it is based. He succeeds superbly above all in transposing into physically powerful images the relentlessness and wildness of the landscape of eastern Norway. The Swedish actor Stellan Skarsgård, without whom it is difficult to imagine Scandinavian cinema today, gives the embittered Trond, who looks back at his youth in the summer of 1948, a stoic composure.”
The winner in the category “Best International Adaption for Children or Young Adults” is the Dutch drama “My Extraordinary Summer with Tess” based on the book by Anna Woltz, directed by Steven Woulterlood and Screenplay by Laura van Dijk. The other nominees in this category were “Alfons Zitterbacke – Das Chaos is zurück” (“Alfons Zitterbacke – Return of the Chaos”) (Gerhart Holtz-Baumert/Mark Schlichter) and “Mein Lotta Leben – Alles Bingo mit Flamingo!” (“My Life as Lotta – All Bingo with Flamingo!”) (Alice Pantermüller/Neele Leana Vollmar).
Finally, the winner in the category “Best Illustrated Book on Film” is “The Big Illusion or How to Build a Movie Miracle”, published by the Slovakian company Slovart Publishing. The other nominees were: “Andrej Tarkovskij Leben und Werk” (“Andrei Tarkovsky: Life and Work”) (Schirmer/Mosel) and “Once Upon a Time in the West: Shooting a Masterpiece” (R|A|P). The prize for the category “Best Illustrated Book on Film” is awarded by Frankfurter Buchmesse, together with the MGIP Motovun Group of International Publishers.
