Next year, 237 candidates from 67 countries will be in the running for the world’s largest and most prestigious children’s literature award, the Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award. This was announced today by the ALMA jury member Mats Kempe on the Frankfurt Kids Stage of Frankfurter Buchmesse.

Facts and figures
The nomination list is a gold mine for anyone interested in international children’s and Young Adults literature. Among the 237 nominees, the list include 49 new names. The candidates represent all continents and are authors, illustrators, reading promoters and storytellers. 46% of the nominees are women, 41% men and 13% are organisations. Of all countries represented, the United Kingdom has the highest number of nominees (20). More than a hundred nominating bodies worldwide have proposed candidates for the 2020 award.

Announcing the new laureate
The laureate of the 2020 Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award will be announced on March 31 in Stockholm and Bologna.
The jury now has the challenging but very pleasant and rewarding job of finding a laureate for 2020. We meet once a month and between meetings we read piles of books and documents. "I look forward to learn more about the works and activities of the candidates", says Boel Westin, chair of the ALMA jury.
