The panel will discuss how publishing statistics, reading survey and cognitive research on reading can be combined to get a clearer view on the state of reading habits in a given society.

Since the beginning of reading habit research, reading surveys have been conducted throughout Europe using different methods. Consequently, results were not comparable. Aldus Up conducted an exploratory survey on reading habits research in 2021 in 20 European countries and – on the basis of that – proposed European Item Core Set for Reading Surveys (ERICS) that is designed to help make reading surveys comparable across countries. But is this enough? What do the publishing data tell us about reading habits as measured by reading surveys? And what does all this mean for qualitative reading research?
