In Europe, one in five 15-year-olds and one in five 16–65-year-olds have poor reading skills, and around 13 million children under 15 years of age and around 55 million adults between 15 and 65 years of age have difficulty reading and writing. How do poor reading skills relate to personal well-being and to the democratic processes in contemporary societies? What can publishing do to improve these numbers?
