Who isn’t familiar with the Angry Birds? They have long been popular all around the world, not just as a computer game, but also in books, as stickers, on bed sheets and clothing, as cuddly toys, and on suitcases and other items. In May this year, the Angry Birds even invaded the big screen. In the session “From Game to Film”, Laura Nevanlinna, Publisher and CEO of Kaiken Publishing, and Ulla Junell, a producer with Rovio Animation Company, will tell us about the many different crossmedial collaborations it has spawned, especially the film.
Wherever the Minecraft name appears, there’s sure to be a profit. With more than 100 million copies sold to date, this treasure chest of value addition now includes Lego bricks, novels, instruction books, supplementary software and YouTube channels. Warner Bros recently announced the Minecraft film premiere for 2019. In the case study “From Game to Book”, Eleanor Fletcher, Global Brand Management Director at Egmont Publishing UK, will provide us with insights into the highly diversified marketing world of the successful computer game. She is responsible for the cooperation with Minecraft developer Mojang/Microsoft.
Laurent Duvault, Director of International and Audio-Visual Development with Franco-Belgian publishing group Media Participations, will take a behind-the-scenes look at an ongoing film project based on a comic. Director Luc Besson (Nikita, Léon: The Professional, The Fifth Element) is currently busy filming the famous sci-fi comic series, Valérian et Laureline (UK publisher: Cinebook). The film, Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets, starring Dane DeHaan and supermodel Cara Delevingne, is due for release in 2017.
Turning a successful novel into a computer game – this is the subject matter for bestselling author Markus Heitz and Jan Theysen of KING Art Games, whose talk will focus on Heitz’s fantasy saga, The Dwarves (Orbit/Yen), which is currently being adapted into a computer game.
A tour of the Book Fair for film and games producers will provide them with deeper insights into the publishing industry. Publishers and rights managers will present their portfolios to the participants in the tour, making sure they get to see relevant material.
