The 2018 Fellows have been selected / New record: 105 applicants from 42 countries

Frankfurt, 17 September 2018 – The Frankfurt Fellowship Programme of Frankfurter Buchmesse is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year. The programme was created on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of Frankfurter Buchmesse in 1998 and has been promoting international dialogue between young publishing professionals ever since.

In 2018, 105 young publishing professionals from 42 countries applied to participate in the programme – a new record. Interest in the programme has never been greater. This year’s participants include, for the first time, young professionals from Armenia and Singapore. Beginning on 1 October 2018, the 16 Frankfurt Fellows will visit publishing companies and attend networking events in Berlin, Frankfurt and Cologne. The highlight of the two-week programme is the Frankfurter Buchmesse (10-14 October 2018). To celebrate the anniversary, a reception with the Frankfurt Fellows will be held on the Thursday of the book fair, to which former programme participants as well as publishers who have hosted the programme will also be invited.

“We are very proud that, for two decades already, we have been bringing together young publishing professionals from around the world with the Frankfurt Fellowship Programme”, says Juergen Boos, Director of Frankfurter Buchmesse. “Having a good network is essential in the publishing industry – as is knowledge of the book markets in different countries. With our Fellowship Programme, we’ve reached over 350 participants from more than 60 countries, thereby contributing significantly to this.”

Dominique Pleimling, a 2017 participant, says: “The majority of the novels I acquire come from abroad. So an international network is obviously important. In addition to scouts and agents, at this point many of the good leads, reading suggestions and tips I get come from my Frankfurt Fellows.”

Since 2017, one Frankfurt Fellow each year receives funding from the Kobrak family as the “Fred Kobrak Frankfurt Fellow”. In memory of Fred Kobrak, a long-serving executive in the publishing industry and great friend of Frankfurter Buchmesse, who passed away in 2016, his family covers the travel and accommodation costs for one Frankfurt Fellow. The 2018 “Fred Kobrak Frankfurt Fellow” is Ana Ojeda from Argentina.

With its Business Club, the Frankfurter Buchmesse offers essential services and an ideal setting for the activities of entrepreneurs, publishers, founders, pioneers, experts and visionaries. THE ARTS+ was launched in 2016 as a fair, business festival and international meeting place for the cultural and creative industries. It aims to exploit the potential of digitalisation for creative content and to develop new business areas.
