FBM expands a partnership with Shoot The Book! in Cannes and organises its first Publishers’ Tour / Submission deadline: 24 February 2019

The 72nd Cannes Film Festival will take place from 14 to 25 May 2019. This year, for the first time, Frankfurter Buchmesse (16-20 October 2019) is organising a Publishers’ Tour in Cannes for six publishers from Germany and publishers from Frankfurt’s upcoming Guest of Honour countries.

These publishers are invited to participate in two events at Cannes: the pitching session “Shoot the Book!” on 21 May and the new event “Shoot the Book! Rendez-Vous”, a meeting corner with tables for publishers and producers, on 20 May. Frankfurter Buchmesse has been involved in Shoot the Book! since 2017. The aim of the pitching session is to help book publishers find film producers from all over the world – organised by SCELF (Société Civile des Editeurs de Langue Française) and Institut Français, in cooperation with Marché du Film and the Festival de Cannes.

“With this tour, we will establish even closer business ties between the German publishing industry and the international film business. Our aim is to increase international awareness about publishers and authors, ensuring that their books receive attention in the film industry. Film adaptations have always been one of the key ingredients for international blockbusters,” says Juergen Boos, Director of Frankfurter Buchmesse.

Shoot the Book!, initiated by SCELF in 2014, is a unique opportunity for publishers to present books with high screen-adaptation potential. The invited publishers may submit books, and a jury then selects ten titles to be pitched to a group of international producers from around the world at 10 a.m. on 21 May in the Salon des Ambassadeurs at the Cannes Film Festival. The pitching session is followed by a cocktail hour, during which producers and editors can meet and discuss the works presented.

Brand-new event: Shoot the Book! Rendez-Vous

For the first time, SCELF and Institut Français (with Marché du Film and Festival de Cannes) are organising a brand-new event: Shoot the Book! Rendez-Vous. This event, which will complement the traditional morning pitching session, aims to develop an ambitious international Audiovisual Rights Market at the Cannes Film Festival. Forty high-profile book professionals (half French, half from other countries) will come together for this meeting in the Salon des Ambassadeurs. A limited number of tables are reserved for the delegation invited by Frankfurter Buchmesse.

The Publisher’s Tour Cannes organised by Frankfurter Buchmesse is a two-day programme that includes accreditation for the Marché du Film, a high-profile networking lunch, an exclusive Marché du Film tour, a panel discussion and an invitation to master classes on the afternoon of 20 May and to the pitching session on 21 May. It also includes access to the film festival’s online platform to schedule meetings, another networking lunch and a reserved table at the B2B event Shoot the Book! Rendez-Vous for publishers and producers.
