Indoor-market look: the new Gourmet Gallery
A meeting point for FoodTubers, celebrity chefs, travel bloggers and nutrition experts
In the redesigned Gourmet Gallery of Frankfurter Buchmesse (16-20 October 2019) in Hall 3.1 the focus is on lifestyle, the culinary arts and travel. This is where chefs, publishing experts and influencers from the food and travel sector come together to exchange ideas.
Designed to look like an indoor market, the Gourmet Gallery will host delicious cooking events and rich discussion panels and presentations. The popular networking party Nocturne (Wednesday, 16 October 2019, 6.00-9.00 p.m.), to which journalists and bloggers are also warmly invited, will be held here as well.
At the new Gourmet & Travel Salon right next door, socio-political questions around nutrition as well as food and travel on social media will be examined. For example, star cook Sarah Wiener and Reinhild Benning of Germanwatch will discuss how climate protection can work on our plates. And, with the Food & Travel Talk, the salon is presenting a new event with food and travel bloggers, organised by Reisedepeschen Verlag (winner of the 2018 Wildcard). Influencers, bestselling authors, travelgrammers and FoodTubers will meet with publishing houses and agencies to talk about topics such as storytelling on social media and bloggers as book authors. The Food & Travel Talk will be held in German.
According to Marianna Hillmer, Reisedepeschen Verlag: “Digital media and books are still frequently viewed as incompatible. In our talks, we want to make it clear that the two media worlds can mutually complement and inspire each other. We’re excited that so many experts in their field, who operate creatively in both worlds, have agreed to participate in the talks. We look forward to being able to transmit to the audience not only concrete ideas based on these shared conversations but also a deeper understanding of digital platforms.”
“Stories around food are shattering all media formats – there are constantly growing digital communities, food blogs & FoodTubers with millions of followers. This trend is also reflected in the Gourmet Gallery, as is the desire for food as a source of meaning, for mindfulness and for slowing down”, says Hendrik Hellige, Business Development Children Books/Visual Arts, Frankfurter Buchmesse.
A selection of international events at the Gourmet & Travel Salon (Hall 3.1 L 135)
“The Endless Possibilities of Filipino Cuisine” (16 October 2019, 2.00-3.00 p.m.)
Claude Tayag traces the origins of Philippine cuisine, from the indigenous cooking of the pre-colonial era to the introduction of new ingredients and cooking techniques by the country’s Chinese, Indian and Southeast Asian neighbours (Moro cuisine in Mindanao), brought by trade and Islamic conversion and through conquest by Spain and the United States. He will also demonstrate how the traditional fiesta rice dish bringhe is made, using heirloom rice grown on the UNESCO World Heritage Banaue rice terraces. The audience will have a free sampling of this savoury rice dish.
“Mama Sita’s Philippine Flavour Journey” (19 October 2019, 2.00-3.00 p.m.)
Mama Sita’s presents highlights of Philippine gastronomy, which derives its uniqueness from a diversity of natural flavours and various historical influences.
“Crazy about sourdough – book presentation and sourdough bread tasting“ (20 October 2019, 1.00-2.00 p.m.)
Fall in love with sourdough, it’s the best bread to be had! Catch the sourdough_mania bug! Anita is a passionate 100% sourdough baker from Slovenia who began baking out of love for her husband who couldn’t eat yeast bread any more. After lots of reading she found sourdough – the oldest method of making bread. Her Instagram @sourdough_mania (more than 71,500 followers) caught the attention of several big media companies and her videos went viral, with over 40 million views. Food & Wine named her “one of the 8 bread accounts to follow”. She wrote a bestseller, the first Slovenian sourdough book, which is already in its third print run. The book won Gourmand World Cookbook Awards’ Best Bread Book of 2019 award. At the Salon, Anita will present the German translation of her book. And you can try sourdough bread that doesn't taste sour at all, see her story and catch the sourdough mania bug!
