EU project: Europe is looking for homogeneous statistics on reading and translation.
Two studies by Aldus Up, the European book fairs network co-founded in the framework of the Creative Europe programme and coordinated by the Italian Publishers Association (AIE), which were published on the network's platform on 16 June during the Bologna Children's Book Fair show: Europe is not united yet when it comes to statistics on the book world. From reading habits to translations data, each country performs surveys independently, making it difficult to carry out an overall analysis of trends.

GINT Translation Competition: Call out to emerging translators interested in translating texts in the humanities and social sciences
The Geisteswissenschaften International Nonfiction Translation Prize (GINT) is being launched for the fifth time. The competition is open to applicants who have not yet translated more than one complete book from German into English. The three prizewinners will be announced in mid-September and will be invited to participate in a virtual Science Slam at Frankfurter Buchmesse (20-24 October 2021).

Renewed funding from the German government’s NEUSTART KULTUR programme gives exhibitors financial planning security
Exhibitors can now register for the 73rd Frankfurter Buchmesse. Thanks to additional funds from the German government’s NEUSTART KULTUR programme, the terms of cancellation can now be updated so that exhibitors will bear no financial risk from the impact of the global pandemic.

WIPO’s ABC International Excellence Award for Accessible Publishing
Nominations are now open for the Accessible Book Consortium’s International Excellence Award for Accessible Publishing, which recognizes a publisher and a project initiative that each demonstrate outstanding leadership and achievements in advancing the accessibility of commercial e-books or other digital publications for persons who are blind, visually impaired or otherwise print-disabled.

Frankfurter Buchmesse opens registration for exhibitors
Publishers can now register for the 73rd Frankfurter Buchmesse (20–24 October 2021). Dedicated to the topic “re:connect”, this year’s book fair is planned as an in-person event with additional digital formats, and can be flexibly adapted to pandemic-related developments. The focus will be on the international rights business and public events. This year’s Guest of Honour is Canada.

"Books at Berlinale" 2021 to be presented digitally on its 15th anniversary
On 4 March 2021, the Berlinale Co-Production Market will present – in cooperation with Frankfurter Buchmesse – ten high quality books especially well-suited to screen adaptation at "Books at Berlinale". The pitch event, which has been spotlighting current new releases and bestsellers every year since 2006, will take place online for the first time on its 15th anniversary.

Restructuring at Frankfurter Buchmesse complete
The restructuring announced by Frankfurter Buchmesse in November has been completed: corporate structures have been streamlined and the announced reduction in headcount has largely been concluded.

International events at Weltempfang, the 2020 LiBeraturpreis and the African Perspectives symposium
This year’s Weltempfang – Frankfurter Buchmesse’s centre for politics, literature and translation – is dedicated to the topic “Europe – Connecting Cultures”. The programme includes highly topical issues, such as the role of culture, literature and politics in the coronavirus crisis, and debates about displacement, migration and racism. The Weltempfang events will be broadcast each day of the fair at www.buchmesse.de/weltempfang and on Frankfurter Buchmesse's YouTube channel. The opening event will take place on Wednesday, 14 October at 5.30 pm, on the ARD Book Fair Stage in the Festhalle.

Canada Announces Virtual Program for Frankfurter Buchmesse 2020 Special Edition
The Honourable Steven Guilbeault, Minister of Canadian Heritage, announced Canada’s virtual programming for this year’s special edition, in a video message today. The minister was joined virtually by the Honourable Stéphane Dion, Canadian Ambassador to Germany and Special Envoy to the European Union and Europe, Juergen Boos, President of the Frankfurter Buchmesse, and Caroline Fortin, President of Canada FBM2020.

Sending a signal: 72nd Frankfurter Buchmesse with digital exhibitors from 85 countries
Like no other happening in the publishing industry, Frankfurter Buchmesse leads the way in activating global networks, opening up future markets and putting both sector-specific and socio-political issues on the agenda. That will be truer than ever in 2020, the year of corona, as demonstrated by the fair’s thousands of digital exhibitors from approximately 85 countries (as of 20 September 2020). TAlong with this, the book fair will offer ca. 70 hours of professional programme with acclaimed guests, including James Daunt, Ananth Padmanabhan and Jenny Fry and will be a celebration of literature online and in Frankfurt with Karin Slaughter, Elizabeth Gilbert, Irvine Welsh and many more. Literary inspiration and exciting interactions – BOOKFEST programme lets the Special Edition shine, digitally and on site
Every October, culture fans celebrate together at BOOKFEST. This year, the popular festival will take place physically as BOOKFEST city and, for the first time, virtually as BOOKFEST digital – allowing an even bigger and more colourful celebration of stars from the international cultural and literary scene. BOOKFEST city (14–18 October) will offer almost 80 events over all five days of the fair at many locations throughout Frankfurt. BOOKFEST digital will light up screens on 17 October from 10.00 am to 10.00 pm, with approximately 28 hours of highly diverse programming on two channels. Admission or access to both formats is free of charge.

Frankfurt International Booksellers – applications now being accepted for new digital Frankfurter Buchmesse programme
Booksellers from all over the world can now apply to participate in the new digital programme Frankfurt International Booksellers offered by Frankfurter Buchmesse (14–18 October 2020). Organised by Frankfurter Buchmesse with financial support from Germany’s Federal Foreign Office, the programme is designed for booksellers who stock foreign-language titles in their bookshops. Applications being accepted until 28 September 2020.

Frankfurter Buchmesse 2020 – Special Edition: online and in the city of Frankfurt, but without traditional on-site exhibition
Frankfurter Buchmesse (14-18 October 2020) will take place this year: with an extensive digital programme for publishing professionals, exciting online events at BOOKFEST digital for an international readership, as well as live events in Frankfurt on the ARD Book Fair Stage in the Festhalle and some 80 events as part of BOOKFEST city. The book fair’s traditional on-site exhibition is being cancelled this year due to the corona pandemic, since current travel restrictions would prevent numerous country stands from being realised as planned. In addition, the quarantine requirements that will be enforced on 1 October 2020 make it virtually impossible for European exhibitors and trade visitors to participate.

The submissions period for the Frankfurter Buchmesse Film Awards is open: Until 28 August 2020, publishers and production and media companies may submit their proposals for the Film Awards for the categories "Best Literary Adaptation", "Best Adaptation for Children or Young Adults" and "Best Illustrated Book on Film".
