Lawrence Schimel is a bilingual (Spanish/English) writer & literary translator based in Madrid. He has published over 120 books as an author or anthologist, in many different genres and for readers of all ages. His children's books featuring same-sex families, Bedtime, Not Playtime! and Early One Morning, have been published in 48 editions around the world in 37 languages, including Icelandic, Luxembourgish, Romansch, Sesotho, Hungarian, and Russian. He has won the Crystal Kite Award from the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators, a White Raven from the International Youth Library in Munich, and his books have been chosen by IBBY for Outstanding Books for Young People with Disabilities three times, among other honors. He is also a prolific literary translator, both into English and into Spanish, of over 140 books in many different genres, with a special emphasis on racialized writers, women writers, and LGBTQ writers. His translations have won a PEN Translates Award from English PEN (three times), a 2022 National Endowment for the Arts Translation Fellowship, and translation grants from Conaculta in Mexico, the National Book Development Board Philippines, DGLAB in Portugal, etc. He runs the independent poetry publisher A Midsummer Night's Press, with a dedicated imprint on women writers in translation and another for LGBTQ voices. He served 2 terms as the co-chair of the Publishing Triangle, the organization of lesbians and gay men in the US publishing industry, and founded the Spain chapter of the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators and served as its Regional Advisor for 5 years. He also programmed the first two joint SCBWI-Bologna Book Fair Conferences.
