The European AI Act is a landmark piece of legislation that has far-reaching impact on the publishing industry. In this panel a series of experts will discuss the practice and principle behind the Act and how it can be implemented. In an open discussion, they will share their views on the EU vs global developments, and ponder what is likely to happen next.

Introduction & Context

In an era where misinformation spreads faster than facts, the entire publishing, reading and information transfer world is being upended by the rapid rise of artificial intelligence. As AI tools become more powerful and ubiquitous, we are witnessing firsthand a complete shift in the methods by which knowledge is created, distributed, and consumed. Researchers, libraries and publishing organisations are increasingly adopting AI-based development and integration in an ever-changing landscape of regulations, habits and tools.

An overarching piece of legislation that has just gone into effect is the European AI Act. It is the first global attempt to regulate the development and deployment of AI tools and systems, it directly impacts publishers and institutions using or exploring AI as any part of their development or product lifecycle.

In this panel, a series of experts with a background in the legal and ethical regulation of AI will discuss the following topics:

  • How the EU AI Act impacts the legal and ethical frameworks that publishers and research institutions operate in
  • Some key actions are that can be taken to prepare an organisation to be compliant with the AI Act and aware of changes, moving forward
