Stephan Trudewind

Stephan Trudewind studied in Vienna, Tübingen, and Berlin from 1979 to 1986 and earned a degree in political science with a minor in Islamic studies. His first professional positions were at the publishing and bookstores Das Arabische Buch and Verlag und Vertrieb Arlt und Schiller, both in Berlin. After the fall of the Berlin Wall, he worked for a time at the Brandenburg State Agency for Structure and Labor before returning to the publishing industry. In 1993, he began working for the publishing house Edition Orient, initially on a freelance basis, until he was able to take over the company in 1999 when the then-publisher, Dietlind Schack, retired. From 1996 to 2006, he also edited the journal *Der Arabische Almanach*. The publishing house focuses on non-European children’s books—most of which are published in bilingual or multilingual editions—and literature from the Orient.

His publishing house, Edition Orient, was awarded the Berlin Publishing Prize in 2020, followed by the German Publishing Prize in 2021 and 2024. In 2026, he was awarded the Folker Skulima Art Foundation’s Encouragement Prize.
Stephan Trudewind is married and lives in Berlin.
