Joachim Unseld was born in Frankfurt am Main on September 20, 1953. On October 1, 1994, he took over Frankfurter Verlagsanstalt (FVA) from Zurich-based Haffmans AG. Since then he has been the publisher and sole shareholder of FVA, which is based in Frankfurt. He has been a translator of the works of Jean-Philippe Toussaint since 1991.
