Together with Marsilio Editori and the De Michelis family, Frankfurter Buchmesse is pleased to announce that the winner of the Cesare De Michelis International Award for Publishing 2026 is Jonathan Galassi, Chairman Emeritus and Executive Editor at Farrar Straus & Giroux in New York.

Promoted by Marsilio Editori as part of the Incroci di Civiltà literary festival, in collaboration with Ca’ Foscari University of Venice and in partnership with the Frankfurter Buchmesse, the Cesare De Michelis International Award for Publishing is annually given to publishers who have distinguished themselves on the international scene with the vitality and novelty of their publishing achievements.

The members of the jury are Teresa Cremisi (President), and the awarded publishers Naveen Kishore (Seagull Books, 2022), Michael Krüger (Carl Hanser Verlag, 2023), Fiona McCrae (Graywolf Press, 2024), Luiz Schwarcz (Companhia das Letras, 2025), as well as Juergen Boos (Director of Frankfurter Buchmesse), and Francesca Varotto (Marsilio Editori).

The event dedicated to the 2026 award-winning publisher will take place on the Centre Stage (Hall 4.1 B68) of Frankfurter Buchmesse on Thursday 16 October at 4.00 pm.

Together with Jonathan Galassi, speakers will include:

Juergen Boos, Director of Frankfurter Buchmesse

Luca De Michelis, CEO of Marsilio Editori

Flavio Gregori, Director of Incroci di civiltà, Ca’ Foscari

Luiz Schwarcz, Publisher of Companhia das Letras, Brasil.

The prize ceremony will be held in Venice, during the literary festival Incroci di civiltà, 15-18 April 2026.

About Jonathan Galassi
Jonathan Galassi started working in publishing in 1973, first at Houghton Mifflin, then at Random House, and since 1986 at Farrar, Straus & Giroux, where he has served as editor in chief, publisher, president, chairman, and now chairman emeritus and executive editor. The many American and international writers he has worked with include Michael Cunnnigham, Edmund de Waal, Jeffrey Eugenides, Jonathan Franzen, Thomas L. Friedman, Louise Gluck, Seamus Heaney, Denis Johnson, Jamaica Kiincaid, Alice McDermott, Marilynne Robinson, Roberto Saviano, Scott Turow, Derek Walcott, and Tom Wolfe. He has translated into English the poetry of Giacomo Lepardi, Primo Levi, and Eugenio Montale and written two novels and four works of poetry. He lives in New York City.
