Die 73. Frankfurter Buchmesse (20.-24. Oktober 2021) setzte für die Kulturbranche ein wichtiges Zeichen in der Pandemie. Dank eines umfangreichen Hygienekonzeptes konnte sich das Fach- und das Privatpublikum unter dem Motto “Re:connect” wieder sicher begegnen. 36.000 Fachbesucher*innen aus 105 Ländern und 37.500 Leser*innen aus 85 Ländern hat die Frankfurter Buchmesse 2021 als die erste große Präsenzveranstaltungen der internationalen Buchbranche erreicht. Insgesamt 2013 Unternehmen aus 80 Ländern präsentierten sich in den Hallen, im LitAg, an den neuen Workstations oder als digitale Aussteller*innen im Netz. Insgesamt 2.500 Medienvertreter*innen aus 39 Ländern waren für die diesjährige Frankfurter Buchmesse akkreditiert.

With THE ARTS+, Frankfurter Buchmesse is once again making space for media art and moving images, for innovative media developments on the future of the creative industries worldwide. THE ARTS+ area can be found in the Forum, Level 0 from 20 to 24 October 2021.

In diesem Jahr startet die Frankfurter Buchmesse das Fachprogramm "Frankfurt Studio: Inside Publishing", das von Mittwoch bis Freitag (20. bis 22. Oktober 2021) live und vor Ort auf der Messe ein vielfältiges Programm bietet. Die Messebesucher*innen können das Programm auf einer großen LED-Leinwand auf der Agora, der Freifläche zwischen den Messehallen, verfolgen während Zuschauer*innen die Veranstaltungen auf der Homepage der Frankfurter Buchmesse unter buchmesse.de sehen können.

Beim Global 50 CEO Talk am 20, Oktober 2021 teilen zwei renommierte Gastredner*innen vor dem Hintergrund des aktuellen „Global 50“ Verlagsranking ihre Einschätzungen und Perspektiven: Die New Yorker Investment Bankerin Robin Warner von Oaklin DeSilva+Philips, und Klaus Driever von der Münchner Allianz Gruppe, einem der führenden integrierten Finanzdienstleister weltweit.

The Governor General of Canada, Her Excellency the Right Honourable Mary May Simon, will travel to Frankfurt from 19 to 21 October 2021, where she will represent Canada, the Guest of Honour at this year’s Frankfurter Buchmesse (20-24 October 2021).The Governor General will speak at the opening ceremony and the opening of the Canadian pavilion. This will be Her Excellency’s first visit abroad since being installed as the 30th Governor General of Canada on July 26, 2021.

Under the motto Re:connect, the international publishing industry will come together at Frankfurter Buchmesse (20-24 October 2021). An all-digital professional programme will take place in the run-up to the book fair week from 11 to 15 October 2021 for the first time. Tickets for Frankfurt Conference go on sale on 22 September 2021. Registration for various formats, which are in part free of charge, is already open.

Two studies by Aldus Up, the European book fairs network co-founded in the framework of the Creative Europe programme and coordinated by the Italian Publishers Association (AIE), which were published on the network's platform on 16 June during the Bologna Children's Book Fair show: Europe is not united yet when it comes to statistics on the book world. From reading habits to translations data, each country performs surveys independently, making it difficult to carry out an overall analysis of trends.

The Geisteswissenschaften International Nonfiction Translation Prize (GINT) is being launched for the fifth time. The competition is open to applicants who have not yet translated more than one complete book from German into English. The three prizewinners will be announced in mid-September and will be invited to participate in a virtual Science Slam at Frankfurter Buchmesse (20-24 October 2021).

Exhibitors can now register for the 73rd Frankfurter Buchmesse. Thanks to additional funds from the German government’s NEUSTART KULTUR programme, the terms of cancellation can now be updated so that exhibitors will bear no financial risk from the impact of the global pandemic.

Nominations are now open for the Accessible Book Consortium’s International Excellence Award for Accessible Publishing, which recognizes a publisher and a project initiative that each demonstrate outstanding leadership and achievements in advancing the accessibility of commercial e-books or other digital publications for persons who are blind, visually impaired or otherwise print-disabled.

Publishers can now register for the 73rd Frankfurter Buchmesse (20–24 October 2021).  Dedicated to the topic “re:connect”, this year’s book fair is planned as an in-person event with additional digital formats, and can be flexibly adapted to pandemic-related developments. The focus will be on the international rights business and public events. This year’s Guest of Honour is Canada.

On 4 March 2021, the Berlinale Co-Production Market will present – in cooperation with Frankfurter Buchmesse – ten high quality books especially well-suited to screen adaptation at "Books at Berlinale". The pitch event, which has been spotlighting current new releases and bestsellers every year since 2006, will take place online for the first time on its 15th anniversary.

The restructuring announced by Frankfurter Buchmesse in November has been completed: corporate structures have been streamlined and the announced reduction in headcount has largely been concluded.

The Frankfurt Book Fair has started a process of modernising its concept. The aim is to ensure the continued existence of the Fair at the Frankfurt/M. location in the long term.

Players from across the publishing industry are being invited to pledge their commitment to the future by signing a new Sustainable Development Goals Publishers Compact, launched today at the start of Frankfurter Buchmesse.

Under the motto “Signals of Hope: New Perspectives for a Stronger Future”, Frankfurter Buchmesse’s new all-digital Frankfurt Conference kicks off today, marking the start to the Special Edition book fair week.

Special Mention goes to Antigone by Sophie Deraspe | Appearance of Maria Schrader, Charlie Kaufman and Caroline Link in the livestream award ceremony.

International authors and artists will appear - in person or remotely - on the ARD Book Fair stage of Frankfurter Buchmesse (14-18 October 2020).

This year’s Weltempfang – Frankfurter Buchmesse’s centre for politics, literature and translation – is dedicated to the topic “Europe – Connecting Cultures”. The programme includes highly topical issues, such as the role of culture, literature and politics in the coronavirus crisis, and debates about displacement, migration and racism. The Weltempfang events will be broadcast each day of the fair at www.buchmesse.de/weltempfang and on Frankfurter Buchmesse's YouTube channel. The opening event will take place on Wednesday, 14 October at 5.30 pm, on the ARD Book Fair Stage in the Festhalle.
