Ranya Bakr is co-founder, editor, and rights manager at Al Arabi Publishing and Distributing, an independent publishing house established in 1975 in Cairo, Egypt. The publishing house specializes in nonfiction Arabic books and selectively publishes fiction. In 2010, they launched the imprint, #different_books, to bridge the gap in translated literature, bringing unique voices from the "Strangest" parts of the world to Arab readers. In 2022, Al Arabi was honored with the King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz International Award for Translation. Ranya Bakr, is working on being one of the few female literary agents in the Arab world, starting this business with very successful authors, who have been translated into more than eight languages.
