The Special Programme for Publishers from Ukraine and neighboring countries is an intensive training and networking programme for publishers, editors, foreign rights managers and literary agents from Armenia, the Czech Republic, Georgia, Hungary, Kazakhstan, Moldova, Poland, Romania, the Slovak Republic and Ukraine.

The Special Programme for Publishers from Ukraine and neighboring countries is supported by the Federal Foreign Office of the Federal Republic of Germany, and curated and organised by Frankfurter Buchmesse GmbH in cooperation with International Book Arsenal Festival and Goethe-Institut Ukraine.

Participation requirements are at least two years of professional experience in publishing with a focus on rights and licensing trade and a good command of English.

Date 2024: Arrival on Sunday 13 October and end of programme on Saturday, 19 October 2024.

The application deadline for the Special Programme for publishers from Ukraine and neighbouring countries is 15 April 2024.

The independent wo-men publishing is oriented toward art documentary books. The publishing house was established in 2012 by a literary documentarian Barbora Baronová. The main aim of wo-men publishing is to share high quality literary and photographic non-fiction projects created by mainly Czech authors. Mostly, the books by wo-men include voices of marginalized people, and cover non-mainstream topics. Many of them were awarded in the Czech Republic, as well as abroad.

Wydawnictwo Pauza is a boutique publishing house founded in 2018, specializing in foreign, contemporary, award-winning literary fiction. Pauza’s authors come from all over the world, they include Lauren Groff, Ottessa Moshfegh, Edouard Louis, Miranda July, Kevin Barry, Valeria Luiselli, Emma Cline, Domenico Starnone, Samanta Schweblin, Amanda Svensson, and Sigrid Nunez.
The publishing house was created and is run by Anita Musioł, who worked for a few of the biggest publishing houses in Poland for over 20 years before she decided to strike out on her own. Anita works with a team of freelancers, who translate and edit the books, prepare the typesetting, and cover designs.
2021 saw the launch of Pauza’s first audiobook titles, as well as a nonfiction series. The last Thursday of every month, Pauza’s readers gather online for our monthly book club meetings. Many of Pauza’s authors have visited Poland over the years, with at least one Pauza author attending practically every literary festival every year.

Pauza’s mission and goal is to introduce Polish readers to contemporary writers and bring wonderful new books from all over the world to the Polish literary scene!

Krok is a publisher, a printing house, a festival agency and a point of intersection. Their paths are not easy, but they overcome obstacles and do their job. The Krokish poetry series includes almost 70 books. The list of countries and languages is growing steadily. As a literary agency, Krok promotes Ukrainian literature in the world, but also establishes international contacts, fostering cultural exchange. Krok is a printing house too. Every year, Krok Publishing House initiates visits of foreign writers to Ukraine. Authors participate in festivals and present their books in Ukrainian translation.

FAQ on the Special Programme

The programme is open to publishers, editors, foreign rights managers, and literary agents from Ukraine, Armenia, the Czech Republic, Georgia, Hungary, Kazakhstan, Moldova, Poland, Romania, the Slovak Republic and Ukraine with at least two years of publishing experience and a good command of English.

If the programme can take place, the Frankfurter Buchmesse will cover accommodation and part of the catering in Frankfurt and participants will have the opportunity to apply for a travel allowance.

Before the programme starts, preparatory seminars are offered online, with market presentations and tips on how to prepare for the Frankfurter Buchmesse. On site, the programme consists of a one-day seminar with German experts, followed by participation in the official opening of the Frankfurter Buchmesse and numerous international networking opportunities until the Saturday of the fair.

Participants will also have free time to organise their own meeting schedules while at the fair.
