Denise Phé-Funchal

Writer, Guatemala

Denise Phé-Funchal is a writer, sociologist and university lecturer.  She holds a Master’s degree in higher education and in advanced studies in Spanish and Latin American literature.

In her works, the author unfolds a world that draws on observations about violence, silence and memory. To a large extent, these themes stem from her work as a sociologist, which has led her to engage with women who have been victims of the internal armed conflict in the west of the country.

She has published the novels „Las flores" (2007), „Ana sonríe" (2015) and „La habitación de la memoria" (2015); the short story collections „Buenas costumbres" (2011), „Sala de estar" (2017) and „Polvo" (2024); the poetry collections „Manual de mundo paraíso" (2010) and „Llovía" (2026); and the essays „Hasta encontrarte" (2011) and „José Milla, una biografía" (2022).  She has also published the drama „Dicen" in „Nunca más el fuego" (2019).  Her short stories, poems and essays have been published in anthologies in Guatemala, Argentina, Italy, Bolivia, El Salvador, Nicaragua, the USA, Mexico, Spain, Peru and Germany.

Phé-Funchal has also translated the books „Fuga a Estados Unidos“ (2021), by Susanne Jonas and Néstor Rodríguez, „Topo pecoso“ (2021), „Dormir con la luz encendida“ (2023) and „Para mí eres divina“ (2025), by the Guatemalan-American writer David Unger.
